The American Society of Testing and Materials Terminology Committee
(D10.11) have given final approval to a new definition for "industrial package." RIPA first proposed
the idea for such a definition approximately two years ago.
According to ASTM, an industrial package is "a package used for the transportation or storage of commodities,
the contents of which are not meant for retail sale without being repackaged."

RIPA President Paul Rankin said, "I am very pleased that ASTM has given its approval
to an industrial package definition. For the first time, we will be able to easily
differentiate industrial packaging from other types of packaging. This will help to
ensure that large, multi-use industrial packages, like drums and IBC's, are not
treated in the same manner as, for example, a box of detergent."
ASTM plans to publish the new definition along with other new and revised terms for
later this year.
